USA – Vietnam: The “new page” in bilateral relations

US President Joe Biden said that his country’s relations with Vietnam have “entered a new stage”.

Speaking at a business forum during an official visit to the South Asian country, Biden said the two countries are deepening their cooperation in cloud computing, semiconductors and artificial intelligence.

Vietnam and the US also warned today in a joint statement against “threats or the use of force” in the South China Sea, a message that, as AFP points out, is clearly aimed at Beijing on the occasion of President Biden’s visit to Hanoi .

In addition, the US is “committed to continuing to support Vietnam’s development of its autonomous defense capabilities”, according to this text, which is signed by the US president and head of the Vietnamese Communist Party, Nguyen Phu Trong.

The joint statement, which was released on the second day of the US president’s visit to Vietnam, also referred to “freedom of navigation and overflight”, as well as the need to guarantee trade transactions “without coercion”, as “respect for sovereignty” in this region, which has become one of the most tense zones on the planet.
